I'm from Ireland, but living in Hong Kong at the moment. Luckily, I've had the chance to travel quite a bit and live in some unusual and interesting (and, very occasionally, dangerous) places, like London (UK), Los Angeles (USA), Cape Town (South Africa), Shenzhen (China), Ontario (Canada) and Brasov (Romania).

@ EvilKing... kudos! I'd really like to live in New York for a year or two. Perhaps its not the biggest, but in a weird way, I always kind think of it as the world's capital city.
@ Pulsar... awesome, where in the UK? I lived in London and Exeter for a few years.
@ Myrkin... that's so cool, I would actually really like to visit Poland, I just passed through it on a train once, but at that time I didn't have the budget to stopover.
@ GabDC... a good friend of mine from college, worked there and from him I hear good things about living in Australia. He told me to go live there, said it would suit me (sunshine & beaches)

sadly, I didn't see much... coincidentally, I passed through Poland by train mostly at night, or while sleeping, as part of a long journey between Romania and London one winter.

but I love travelling, so if I ever get time...

Ha world traveler indeed. Thats so kool. Do you travel due to work, family, or wanderlust?

I had a friend in Romania so I've heard all kinds of interesting details about that country. Managed to even get a recipe for their sour soup stock.

I live in New york, but not NYC. Most folk assume new york is the city, but I am in upstate by new york's capital (albany) so really I rarely see the city. And for those wondering, i don't say fuggedaboutdit or sound like i'm from brooklyn or a soprano..lol.

I have been out of the country, but only once overseas. Did a field trip when I was young so I got to fly to Belgium, drive to France and spend 2 weeks there just south of Paris in champagne country. We also did trips to Luxembourg and a small stint in germany (i think). Also been to Canada briefly.

It's actually pretty kool to see folk from so many places!

As for me, since leaving London, these last 8 years I've tried to travel to combine work with visiting interesting new places: so I actively seek opportunities in new countries. In fact, I'm planning to leave Hong Kong soon, so I'm researching online where to go next. Of course, for this kind of lifestyle approach, it helps to be single and adaptable. And you are right, it is great to see people from so many places

Wow, I'm kind of sad. This campaign shows almost 1,200 donators on the indiegogo site and yet there is only about 40 registered users on the forums...

@Seith- Southern France is supposed to be pretty beautiful. I have only seen northern and a bit of central france, and even that had a great beauty and charm. I hope it is not so amazing you spend all your time outside gazing and not working on the game (i'm kidding).

Where I stayed had a lot of fruit tree's in the yard. Do you grow your own at all? It'd be pretty kool if you took HD pics of some of the fruit to be added to the game at some point.

I concur about the numbers of members here, but you know, it's not about quantity but about quality, and there are a few fine blokes (and sheilas?) on this forum

Also, a lot of ppl come to game's forums to talk about the game, not about ideas and the exciting but slow to develop experience of witnessing its making (sorta).

Ahh, Poland! So many fond memories! I did a school exchange ages ago, only for two weeks but we had such a good time and I still love to listen to Kult. Awesome Ska! And then I went back threre a few years ago because the lake I was doing my Bachelor on was located in Poland. Again, we had so much fun and I never forget that tasty as bread soup! Oh, and the science was good too

The countryside is were it's at! Since I've been living in a city (okay, david would probably call it a neat little village

) I constantly miss the possibility to go for a stroll in the woods. Also electric guitars and bow and arrows aren't popular with them city-folk

I know Germany mostly by driving through it (the quality of those highways can not be overstated), but I've been to a few places in Saxony. I especially liked what I saw in area called Saxon Switzerland.

As stated earlier, it may be true that these forums are not overcrowded, but on the other hand the people who do come around seem all very nice!

@EvilKingGumby: I do spend all my days gazing outside; then again there are plenty of little elves that develop the game at night while I'm asleep. So it's all good.

And I actually used quite a few pictures taken around the place I live in. Great spots for trekking and enjoying nature. Also I get a kick out of using textures that are taken from locations I know...

@KwisatzHaderach: Nice pint of brewed healing potion there!

The weather was freezing a few weeks ago (hit -40 C when factoring in windchill) here but it's not that cold now at around -20C... at least for us. The east coast is currently getting the worse weather with the ice storms and power outages.

We don't have many unique types of mice but there are cute ones. We have house mice, deer mice, and field mice.

BTW I love your avatar and signature. Mouse Guard is one of my favourite graphic novels. Actually, it's the book which got me into comics and graphic novels .

Funny you should say that.. My power went out yesterday for most of the day.. lol.. and it was -8 all day *sigh*

But it came back so my house didn't turn into a block or ice nor did my pipes freeze. YAY.

And yes Mouseguard looks pretty kool. I'm actually a bit of a poser in that I haven't read all their books. I originally spotted the set of figurines for the series (i think there was 3 in the set) and got it for a friend that I thought would really like them.I then saw it was related to a graphic novel series, so I got her one of those too and read it while I had it. Then.. life and time took my hand and I totally forgot about it all so I never grabbed copies of the books myself. But I will someday!

Here is a shot of a few of the figurines . they're actually pretty well made!

And here is something neat I spotted lookin for that pic.. so cute. WOuld be fun to have a mouse tavern somewhere in this game!

Good thing the power went back on rather quickly in your area. Last I've heard, some places have been without heat or power for over a week.

MouseGuard: I've read most of the volumes apart from The Black Axe (which I should get to reading soon). One of my best friends introduced me to the series. She was in a comic book store in her city, saw the series, and recommended it to me. Luckily, I was able to get my hands on the series through my local libraries.

Those figurines are beautiful.

I will have to keep a look out to see if they (or the Mousling Tavern) are available locally.

Yeah i rather like the little figurines. They have a nifty charm to them. I haven't seen them in stores though. hmm

we're still getting a ton of cold and our governor declared most of the state a disaster crisis area due to the cold and weather. where i am ok generally ok right now but.. things change quickly. So I'm just praying it stays manageable.

When I see what you and Mousewings are going through... it really hits home how lucky we are with the weather here in Asia. Since living in China, Hong Kong and now... Thailand, it has been about 7 years since I've properly experienced winter.

Thailand has 3 seasons: rainy, hot and cool.... which are all quite physically comfortable and managable. Recently, the rainy season has gotten way out of control, though I personally haven't experienced the severe flooding (thank heaven). When it rains, it just comes down in torrents.

Although I regret the damage to peoples' property, I really enjoy walking in the heavy rain because I get soaked to the skin within a minute, and yet it is still quite warm and pleasant... like a walking shower.

So, with weather in Asia we are really, really fortunate (except those unlucky enough to get blasted by a super typhoon). So, kudos to you folks with more challenging weather patterns

wow Thailand sounds a lot like Arizona.

they also have 3 seasons, rainy, hot and "Oh my god don't leave the house it's hot out"

I've seen the rain ya'll get there at times.. craaaazy stuff. I don't kno whow you could just walk in it without getting sick. Is there any issues with acid rain or the fact there is such an air quality problem in China? does that end up carrying to where you are at all? (not familiar with the jetstream patterns out there)

I don't think most of Asia gets as hot as Arizona, it is bearable thank heaven. However, the air quality in the cities isn't great... a lot of building dust and exhaust fumes settling in the heat. Though I've lived in some of the very worst cities (especially in Dongguan, China) for this, and it doesn't seem to have affected me at all.

Walking in the monsoon rain is fun, really, but have a change of clothes handy

As to the acid rain, sorry, I'm woefully ignorant about its effects in Asia

David: I'm envying the weather in Thailand and H.K. I was going to go to Hong Kong this winter but it didn't pan out. Despite my not being able to stand the weather at times (especially in the summer), it would have been a good get away from the snow and a vacation. The smoggy air affected me when I was there the last two times (I got sick one time). I could smell it right away when I got off the plane.

Warmer weather and no snow is nice, though.

Yeah it has been a brutal winter. Just as we got some nicer warmer weather and the tons of snow started to melt (though not nearly fast enough) we just got nailed with this new storm that spread freezing rain and snow across the region... yick.

makes for some really pretty images of tree branches.

It would be kool to see GoaT have an area of the map explorable that was the result of a severe ice storm. It would be interesting to navigate such slippery conditions, but also seeing everything encased in semi-transparent ice would be fascinating. And you could have some broken ice/falling ice as possible traps/damage. Like knock an enemy back so it hits a tree and a bunch of frozen icicles and branches crash down on it and damage it.

Maybe good for a boss fight..hehheeh

I am so ready for spring..

Nice idea! I certainly want to see that in a game! The only game that I can think of that comes close to what you describe is actually Crysis 1 and Crysis Warhead. The y did the whole ice-thing really well, visually:

It's funny really (not so much for you maybe), but we've had a "terrible" winter in Central Europe in the sense that there was nearly no snow and temps usually stood above 0 °C. I remember taking a walk in a t-shirt around New Year... Since Munich (where I live) is so close to the alps and relatively elevated we usually get lots of snow during the winter. This year I had to get into the mountains to get my fix:

tl;dr winter is OP in the States, needs a buff in Central Europe. Crysis is pretty.

Sorry for the bleak cold winter of no show out where you are. Currently that's what we're in for for at least the next week or so.. lots of dry but cold lingering air. bleh.

I think it may be possible to pull off the effects, I guess it depends on the engine's capabilities. There was a game where you played this cute lil alien that was captured by government agents and has to escape from the facility using a number of different weird powers.. the game used a lot of semi-translucent "gel" like effects to encase objects.. could work if they were properly texture mapped to look like ice... Gawd I can't recall the name of it now.. was a pretty fun game.

we played it on ps3.

Crysis 1 and Crysis 1: Warhead were terrific games for their time, and visually stunning too.

I love to see snow and ice in games too! Technically, this visual effect is probably achievable in Unity with thte right material setup. I remember in CryEngine, it was easily doable. Getting ice-laden branches, or icicles, to fall on enemies is straightforward too, using a breakable joint setup or a triggered event, and the built-in physics functions.

I really sympathize with people suffering through a really long, tough winter. Weather patterns seem to have been a bit weird the last couple of years... I hope it isn't global warming.

As for me, Bangkok (and Hong Kong, which has better weather, cooled by the sea) may be a tiny bit too hot most of the time, but it is easily bearable.
